JESPA Stands with the Edgewater Community to Keep Jefferson Junior/Senior High School Open and Thriving

Edgewater, CO — The Jefferson County Education Support Professionals Association (JESPA) proudly stands with the Edgewater community in advocating for Jefferson Junior/Senior High School to remain a comprehensive 7th-12th grade school that reflects the needs, values, and aspirations of local families. The Edgewater community has a clear and powerful vision for Jefferson — one that includes a community school model, a bilingual education pathway, and expanded career opportunities — and JESPA is fully committed to supporting this vision.

“The Edgewater community knows what’s best for their students,” said JESPA President Zander Kaschub. “A community school model at Jefferson would empower families, educators, and support staff to shape the school’s future and create opportunities that honor the culture, language, and strengths of this community.”

JESPA Supports the Edgewater Community’s Vision:

JESPA is made up of nearly 4,000 Education Support Professionals (ESPs) who work closely with students and families every day. Many of our members have been part of the Jefferson community for decades — living, working, and raising families here. We are not just staff members; we are parents, grandparents, and neighbors who understand firsthand the importance of keeping Jefferson strong and accessible to local families.

Our members build lasting relationships with students and families in classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, and on school buses. We witness the positive impact that culturally responsive programs, bilingual pathways, and strong career options have on student success. We also see the challenges students face and understand that closing or restructuring Jefferson would disrupt the lives of families and create unnecessary hardships for those who rely on the school for stability and opportunity.

A Community-Led Vision for Jefferson

JESPA supports the Edgewater community’s vision for a community school at Jefferson that includes:

  • Local autonomy and decision-making with a Steering Team composed of students, families, support staff, educators, and community members.
  • A bilingual pathway through 12th grade that builds on the success of Edgewater and Lumberg Elementary Schools, giving students the opportunity to continue developing their language skills and earn a Seal of Biliteracy.
  • Stronger junior high and high school experiences that meet the unique needs of 7th and 8th grade learners while expanding career pathways that connect students to real-world opportunities.
