The Jeffco School Board’s new resolution on immigration enforcement is a symbolic gesture that changes nothing. It fails to provide real protections, clear guidance, or accountability for how schools handle ICE enforcement actions.
JESPA has called for actual district-wide policies because it’s frontline support staff—not principals—who answer doors, greet visitors, and interact with law enforcement. Yet these workers have received no training, no guidance, and no clear protocol on what to do if ICE shows up at a school or transportation terminal.
Under Jeffco’s weak resolution, principals are still left to make their own decisions, and ICE agents can enter schools before their documentation is verified. This is dangerous and unacceptable.
JESPA’s resolution demands real protections, including:
✅ A clear, enforceable policy that applies to all Jeffco schools and transportation sites.
✅ Mandatory training for frontline staff so they know their rights and responsibilities.
✅ Accountability measures to prevent inconsistent and arbitrary enforcement.
Board member Erin Kenworthy even admitted the board only approved a resolution, not a policy, saying:
“Perhaps the board will need to revisit the issue later.”
Jeffco can’t afford to “revisit” this later. JESPA will continue to push for real policies, training, and protections—because vague statements don’t keep students and workers safe.
